Chances are, if you are a graduate student, you’ve heard of Three Minute Thesis. The annual event is a university-wide competition where graduate students present their research in three minutes or less to a panel of judges.

The Three Minute Thesis, or 3MT®, as it is widely known amongst graduate communities, was initially developed by the University of Queensland in 2008 and has since expanded to over 600 universities and institutions across 65 countries.

This year’s 3MT® competition will be Ontario Tech’s ninth chapter, and will once again be held virtually due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

3MT® is not only a unique opportunity for graduate students to showcase their research to a wider multi-disciplinary audience, it is also a great opportunity to develop key professional skills and network with new people both within and outside of your research field. But most of all, it’s fun!

Why should you participate in 3MT®?

Skills Development

One of the biggest benefits about participating in 3MT® is that you have access to coaching sessions to help you build confidence and sharpen your presentation skills. Coaching session topics range from how to sell your research to tips on delivering a virtual presentation.

Benefits to Future Employment

Participating in the Three Minute Thesis helps graduate students build professional skills that are valuable to employers. Whether it’s public speaking or communication skills, showcasing your research in the 3MT® competition can help you in your future career endeavors.

Prizes

Not only will participants receive a great experience, but there are also prize incentives available to top performing competitors. The top finalist will receive $1,000, and the runner-up will receive $500. There is also a People’s Choice prize of $250.

If you’re looking for a fun and challenging academic opportunity, then consider taking part in this year’s 3MT®! To register, visit the Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) page on the SGPS website.
